Howdy Incoming Freshman,
Welcome to the Bryan-College Station area and congratulations on entering your first year of college! It is such an exciting time to transition into college, full of new opportunities and friendships, and we are prayerful that the Lord blesses your first few months of this new season of life. With that said, we understand that it can be challenging with all of its unknowns and added responsibility, so we also pray that you lean into the loyal love of God towards you when you feel troubled or unsure of where to go (Psalm 73.23-26).
Here are a few passages we hope will strengthen, reassure and guide you as you engage with your first semester of school:
Regarding identity: Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God (2 Cor. 3.4-6). Remember that the Lord has saved you; he has paid your debts on the cross, conquered the grave in his resurrection, and has offered true life to you today and forever. His sacrifice was sufficient for you, and let this be a constant reminder if you are lacking confidence or questioning who you are.
Regarding community: I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph. 4.1-3). Community takes work! Don't believe the lie that you're the only one lacking in it; many others are in the same boat as you. Instead, make a commitment to the other believers in your life, and strive to fight for the holiness of your friends while being charitable with their shortcomings.
Regarding hard times: Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4.16). You are sure to encounter difficult times in college, sometimes because of decisions we wish we wouldn't have made. Whether it is grinding for a test, struggling to develop friendships, or feeling the weight of a mistake you've made, it is easy to let self-doubt, loneliness, or shame creep into your life. We pray that you would remember your identity in Jesus, that His love for you is unconditional and his grace is overflowing towards you. You may you turn to Him in your time of need.
We are blessed with a uniquely high number of Gospel-centered churches, local ministries, and Christian social organizations in this area. Naturally, we would love to have you at Restoration! However, we hope that you lean on the Lord's guidance as you seek out where He will have you attend church the next four years; and wherever that is, we urge you to be all in as a member of that congregation! Additionally, we hope you enjoy and invest in any other opportunities you commit too, striving to do those things with excellence.
If you choose Restoration as your home, please join a missional community group, where we hope to equip you to know the Word and make disciples of others, encourage you with a community pursuing our shared faith, and reach our city with the Gospel. Join a serve team, and use your unique gifting to build up and meet the needs of the body at Restoration. There is a navigation bar above and links below to help you take a look at our core values and hear about the mission and vision of our church. We would be blessed to have you as a member of our church family.
Again, our prayer as a college team is that the Lord blesses the beginning of your college journey. Come find us if there's anything we can do for you! Enjoy this semester, soak in these sweet, formative years of college, and always remember that the Lord is with you (Matt. 28.20).
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope (Rom. 15.13).
In Him,
The Restoration College Ministry Team
